Romantics in Retrospect – Abschlusskonzert: Ein neues Kapitel

Pianist Shaun Choo presents his final concert, "Romantics in Retrospect," an emotional homage to two decades of artistic development, featuring works by Chopin, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, and the premiere of his own Time Traveller's Sonata.

The pianist, originally from Singapore and now living in Berlin, began his studies at the age of 14 at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees with highest distinction. In 2019, he was the first external piano candidate in many years to be accepted into the Konzertexamen program at the Berlin University of the Arts. With 13 international competition prizes, he is considered an artist of great expressiveness and a deep understanding of Romantic music.

The program opens with Chopin's passionate Scherzo No. 1, the introspective Nocturne in C minor and the heroic Polonaise in F-sharp minor, followed by Mendelssohn's Fantasy in F-sharp minor, a work full of storm and lyricism, inspired by his travels in Scotland.

The second part features works by Rachmaninoff—the poetic Prelude in B minor, the powerful Prelude in G minor, and the intimate Vocalise in Zoltán Kocsis's piano arrangement. Choo's own Time Traveller's Sonata concludes, bridging musical eras from baroque elegance to jazzy vitality—a personal declaration of the timelessness of art.

The concert marks the completion of his concert exam and also supports the mission of Fiestravaganza gUG, a non-profit organization promoting young musicians.
